Advisory Against Mobile Phone Scams

The Philippine Embassy wishes to remind all Filipinos in South Korea to be wary of mobile phone scams that lure victims into thinking they won an electronic raffle. The victims are then requested to remit money as payment for taxes and other processing fees, after which the victims lose all communication with the suspects.

The public is also advised to be vigilant against similar internet scams. A variation of this modus operandi requests potential victims to assist in withdrawing money from offshore accounts or in sending financial aid to supposedly distressed individuals. Everyone is requested to carefully discern incoming messages from supposedly well-meaning individuals and to alert the proper authorities if fraudulent activity is suspected.
