Amb. Cruz Highlights Role of Migrant Communities and Culture in Attaining Security

4 June 2008 – Philippine Ambassador to South Korea Luis T. Cruz reported to the Department that, as the invited guest of Pyeongtaek City in Gyeonggi Province, he highlighted the role that culture plays in attaining peace and security, as well as the contribution of migrant communities in the economic development of both the host country and their respective countries of origin.

Amb. Cruz made the remarks during the opening ceremony of the 2008 Super Pyeongtaek 5th International Peace Festival in Pyeongtaek City, which is about one hour from Seoul, on 31 May. The event was co-organized by the Association of Songtan Special Tourism Zone as part of its cultural program in order to promote international awareness and understanding to South Koreans. As part of the activities, migrant communities showcased traditional performances including songs and dances. The Philippines was represented by the Hyehwa-dong Catholic Community, the largest organization of Filipinos in South Korea, which danced the Tinikling, Cariñosa and Pandanggo sa Ilaw. The Philippines also sponsored a fiesta-themed booth which sold traditional Filipino food and featured native costumes. “It has been proven time and again that culture can serve as a means towards many objectives. The usual route is the development of mutual understanding and awareness among peoples. Through culture, we break down psychological barriers and diminish prejudices,” said Amb. Cruz. He added, “Culture can also pave the way for viable economic enterprises. Businesses thrive because of cultural attractions. Tourism industries flourish because of the natural curiosities of peoples which, inevitably, lead to the creation of jobs.” The Philippine-Korean Cultural House in Seoul spearheaded the Philippine participation.
