Filipino Students Shine in the Third Asia Pacific Model United Nations Conference (3rd APMUN)


28 July 2008 - Four university students, headed by Mr. Jones Espeleta of the United Nations Association of the Philippines, successfully took part in the Third Asia Pacific Model United Nations Conference held in Incheon City from 20 to 25 July 2008.

The Filipino students actively participated in the exchange of views on critical global issues during the conference. They also benefited from the public speaking and communication skills training provided for the delegates.

Mr. Mylo Fausto, Cultural Officer of the Embassy, welcomed the Philippine delegates during the Opening Ceremony held on 21July 2008, at the Ramada Hotel.

The model UN conference is an initiative of the World Federation of United Nations Association to foster model UN activities in the Asia Pacific focusing on the achievement of Millennium Development Goals. It also aims to develop a network of young people in the Asia Pacific region with the capacity to become future leaders. This year’s theme is “Achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015: Reducing Global Poverty and Improving Living Standards through a More Proactive Approach.”

Around 80 delegates from different countries are represented in the conference.

Driven by urbanization and rising natural calamities in the Philippines, the Ambassador emphasized the importance of shifting the focus from reactive crisis management to proactive readiness, allowing communities to recover much faster through shared governance.
