PHILIPPINES SEEKS EL SALVADOR SUPPORT FOR UN SECURITY COUNCIL CANDIDATURE
Ambassador Bernadette Therese C. Fernandez was pleased to meet Ambassador-designate Federico Miguel Gerrero Avendaño who just arrived in Seoul four months ago at the El Salvador Embassy, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
20 January 2026 – Philippine Ambassador to the ROK Bernadette Therese C. Fernandez paid a courtesy call on H.E. Federico Miguel Guerrero Avendaño, Ambassador of the Republic of El Salvador to the Republic of Korea, reaffirming the warm and friendly relations between the Philippines and El Salvador.
Ambassador Fernandez briefed Ambassador Guerrero on the Philippines’ candidature for election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, emphasizing its commitment to the rule of law, peaceful settlement of disputes, protection of civilians, inclusive peace processes, and strengthened UN peacekeeping operations. Both sides likewise expressed appreciation for the steady growth of bilateral ties and underscored the significance of the forthcoming 80th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in July 2026 as an important milestone to further deepen political dialogue, people-to-people exchanges, and cooperation in mutually beneficial sectors.
The Philippine side highlighted its commitment to closer collaboration in trade and investments, agriculture, and disaster risk reduction and management, particularly in view of the shared climate and disaster-related challenges faced by both countries. Both sides also agreed on the importance of maintaining open and regular dialogue on migration, consular, and people-to-people concerns. END
