12 June 2026, SEOUL – Seoul’s iconic Some Sevit, the Floating Islands on the Hangang River, was illuminated in the colors of the Philippine flag on 12 June 2026 in commemoration of the 128th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence.
The illumination was undertaken through the coordination of the Philippine Embassy in Korea with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, bringing the Philippine colors to one of Seoul’s most recognizable cultural landmarks.
Completed in 2011 at the southern end of Banpo Bridge, Some Sevit comprises three artificial floating islands linked by overpasses and a media art gallery. Regarded as the world’s first floating architecture built on water, it has become a prominent feature of Seoul’s cultural landscape and a well-loved destination for residents and visitors alike.
Philippine Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Bernadette Therese C. Fernandez welcomed the tribute and was pleased to meet members of the Filipino community who gathered at Banpo Hangang Park for the occasion.
The Ambassador noted that the illumination of Some Sevit was a meaningful and highly visible expression of Filipino pride in the heart of Seoul, as well as a symbol of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s deep appreciation for the vibrant and dynamic strategic partnership between the Philippines and the Republic of Korea.
The Philippine Embassy in Seoul has previously worked with Korean partners to illuminate major Seoul landmarks, including Banpo Bridge in 2025 and Seoul Metropolitan Government City Hall in 2023, in celebration of Philippine Independence. END
