PINOY ISKOLARS SA KOREA (PIKO) VISITS THE PHILIPPINE EMBASSY - HIGHLIGHTS MEMBERSHIP GROWTH, ACADEMIC INITIATIVES AND STRENGTHENED COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT


07 December 2025, Seoul – The Filipino student organization Pinoy Iskolars sa Korea (PIKO) paid a courtesy call on Philippine Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Bernadette Therese C. Fernandez today at the Philippine Embassy in Seoul. The meeting provided an opportunity for the scholars to share updates on the organization’s recent accomplishments and upcoming programs.

PIKO officers reported a steady increase in membership, reflecting the continued rise of Filipino students across South Korea’s universities. Members are currently pursuing undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs in fields including international studies, artificial intelligence, language, economics, creatives, engineering, business, social sciences, and other advanced disciplines. The scholars represent institutions from various regions across the Korean peninsula, underscoring the growing academic footprint of the Filipino community in Korea.

During the courtesy call, the officers also expressed interest in continuing with the “SiyentiPIKO” research colloquium,a program in collaboration with the Embassy designed to highlight the research outputs and academic contributions of Filipino scholars in Korea. The initiative aims to create avenues for interdisciplinary learning, innovation, and collaboration.

In addition, the organization discussed the “Summer Salo-Salo sa Embahada”, an annual fellowship activity intended to strengthen unity and cultural ties among Filipino students in South Korea. The event allows students to engage with one another and with Embassy officials in an informal, community-building setting.

Ambassador Fernandez expressed appreciation for the organization’s initiatives and reaffirmed the Embassy’s support for Filipino scholars and students in Korea.
 “Our scholars carry with them not only their academic ambitions but also the story of the Filipino identity,” Ambassador Fernandez said. “I encourage all of you to take pride in your heritage, uphold the values that define us as a people, and serve as exemplary representatives of the Philippines during your stay in Korea.”

She also emphasized the importance of community solidarity. “Staying united is essential. As you pursue your individual paths, let your shared purpose as Filipino scholars strengthen your bonds and guide your contributions both here and back home,” she added.

PIKO officers are composed of: Ms. Cassandra “Aya” Dela Cruz – President; Mr. Justin “Migo” Dolot – VP for Internal Affairs; Ms. Shiela Mae Mateo – VP for External Relations; Ms. Jane “Nana” Klarissa Angela Valdueza – Promotions & Communications Head; Ms. Princess Pravika Rai – Seoul Regional Representative; and Ms. Kristine “Chelo” Denise Chiong – Gyeonggi Regional Representative. PIKO members present were – Mr. Kenneth Lagamayo – PIKO Adviser and Past President, Mr. Alfred Alcantara – PIKO Alumni, Mr. Kenn Arcenal, Ms. Ana Mae Roa, Ms. Ley Nicole Jangolan, Ms. Cassandra Tasic, Mr. Ruzcko Tobias, Ms. Patrixia Lopena, Ms. Christine Louise Belleza, Ms. Gia Dela Cruz, Mr. Francis Gabriel Santos, Ms. Angelica Joy Gabriel, and Ms. Janah Lynelle Gomez. 

Also present during the courtesy call was Mr. Jung Hwi-seong of The Korea Times, who covers the student affairs beat and Embassy Cultural Officer Anthony Z. Cornista.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment between the Embassy and PIKO to continue working together in promoting academic excellence, cultural pride, and the overall well-being of Filipino scholars in South Korea. END

PHILIPPINE EMBASSY IN SEOUL JOINS 44TH INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMS DAY

23 January 2026, Seoul–Philippine Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Bernadette Therese C. Fernandez joined Korea Customs Service (KCS) Commissioner Myeong-ku Lee, senior officials, and members of the diplomatic corps in celebrating the 44th International Customs Day on 23 January 2026 at Novotel Ambassador Seoul Gangnam. The event underscored the vital role of customs in securing and facilitating global trade—a field of growing cooperation between the Philippines and the Republic of Korea. In his address, Commissioner Lee highlighted that modern customs go beyond processing goods, serving as a critical function for trade facilitation, supply chain security, and public safety. He also noted KCS’s use of artificial intelligence and digital technologies to improve efficiency, inspections, and risk response. These initiatives align with the Philippines’ customs reform efforts and ongoing collaboration with the KCS, including information exchange, capacity-building, and technical cooperation to strengthen enforcement, risk management, and trade facilitation.
