PHILIPPINE AMBASSADOR PAYS FAREWELL CALL ON CHAIRMAN OF PH-ROK PARLIAMENTARY FRIENDSHIP GROUP
Yeouido, Republic of Korea — Philippine Ambassador to the Republic of Korea paid a farewell call on PH-ROK Parliamentary Friendship Chairman Rep. Kim Sungwon last 8 July 2025 at the National Assembly. The Ambassador extended her gratitude for the Parliamentary Friendship Chair’s steadfast friendship and invaluable support over the last four years. Ambassador Dizon-De Vega likewise acknowledged the invaluable role of the ROK-Philippine Parliamentary Friendship Group of the National Assembly in strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in promoting robust legislative cooperation and productive people-to-people exchanges through regional parliamentary dialogues and capacity-building activities. She likewise expressed appreciation for Rep. Kim’s involvement in high-level Philippine congressional visits to the Republic of Korea from 2021 to 2025, including at Speaker-level for both nations.

Fernandez received Mr. Sang-soo Jun, the Republic of Korea’s Candidate for Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), in a courtesy call at the Philippine Embassy in Seoul on 26 January 2026. During the meeting, Mr. Jun shared his vision for a more inclusive and future-ready IPU, underscoring the importance of parliamentary cooperation in addressing global challenges such as climate change, sustainable development, gender equality, good governance, and responsible fiscal management. He likewise highlighted the role of digital innovation, including e-parliament and AI-enabled parliamentary systems, in strengthening democratic institutions, particularly in developing countries.

1 July 2026, Seoul - Philippine Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Bernadette Therese C. Fernandez met with ROK Ministry of Foreign Affairs Director General for Southeast Asian Affairs Lee Donggy on 19 June 2026 to discuss ways to further advance the Philippines-ROK Strategic Partnership. The meeting reaffirmed the active and wide-ranging cooperation between the Philippines and the Republic of Korea across political, economic, development, security, and people-to-people fields. Both sides also exchanged views on ASEAN-ROK cooperation, particularly in light of the Philippines’ role as ASEAN Chair in 2026, and underscored the importance of sustained engagement in advancing shared regional priorities.
